Hawkins Stands Up for Credico

Press Release

Date: Oct. 2, 2014

Former Democratic gubernatorial primary candidate Randy Credico appears in court today to face charges for videotaping police in August.

The Green Party candidate for Governor, Howie Hawkins, called today for all charges against Credio to be dismissed.

"Citizens have a clear constitutional right to take photographs and videos of things that are plainly visible from public spaces, including the activities of police in the performance of their duties. Credico was arrested because he was taping police officers questioning a black man in a New York City subway station. It is those police officers, not Credico, who violated the law," Hawkins said.

"Taping police actions like Credico did can help reduce the problem of police violence against citizens, particularly people of color and those who politically dissent. Randy was doing a public service when he was arrested. The charges against him should be dismissed," Hawkins said.
